What This Program Is
The J-1 Teacher Exchange Program is a U.S. Department of State cultural exchange program.
It allows qualified educators to teach full-time in accredited U.S. K-12 schools for up to three years, with the possibility of extension for a fourth and fifth year, subject to your sponsor’s and host school’s approval.
It is a cultural exchange, not an immigration pathway.
Talinta is not a U.S. Department of State–designated sponsor. We work with designated sponsors, who determine your eligibility, approve your host school, and issue your DS-2019.
Who We’re Looking For
We recruit qualified educators across all K-12 subject areas, and focus on special education, mathematics, science, and ESL or bilingual education — the areas where U.S. schools face the most persistent shortages.

Eligibility Requirements
To participate, you must meet the following baseline requirements mandated by the U.S. Department of State.
- Current Employment / Recent Degree: You must either be working as a teacher in your home country at the time of application OR have completed an advanced degree within the past 12 months alongside having two years of full-time teaching experience within the past eight years.
- Education: You must hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree (or higher) in either education or the specific academic subject field you intend to teach.
- Experience: You need a minimum of two years (24 months) of full-time, lead classroom teaching experience.
- Licensure: You must meet the qualifications to teach in primary or secondary schools in your home country, as well as satisfy the specific standards of the U.S. state where you will be placed.
- English Language: You must possess sufficient English proficiency to comfortably navigate a U.S. classroom, lead instruction, and communicate with administration and parents.
- Character: You must be of good reputation and character, which sponsors verify using character references and criminal background checks.
- Full-Time Definition: Full-time means at least 32 hours per week of teaching or teaching-related duties.

When a placement isn’t working
A teacher already in the U.S. on a J-1 visa finds their placement isn’t going well and isn’t sure where to turn. Their sponsor is the right first call — sponsors carry federal responsibility for participant welfare and are the only party who can approve a change of host school. We help them understand what their sponsor is likely to ask for, and stay available if their sponsor later approves a move and they want help finding the next school.

A teacher holds a degree and a valid license from her home country, but doesn’t know how U.S. districts and sponsors will read them. We review what she has against what the program requires and tell her plainly where she stands — before she has paid anything.

The visa is stamped and the first day of school has come and gone — and that is usually when the real questions start, about housing, a new community, and an unfamiliar school system. We check in regularly through the whole first academic year, not just until arrival.

Understanding the new admission rule
A teacher planning to teach beyond their first year wants to know exactly how long they can stay. A new federal rule takes effect September 15, 2026 and will replace open-ended admission for J-1 participants with a fixed period shown on your Form I-94 — that date, not your DS-2019, controls how long you may remain, and it can be shortened to match your passport’s expiry. We cover this in your written disclosure and confirm your current position with your sponsor before you depart; for anything requiring a filing, we refer you to your sponsor and a licensed attorney.

Once a district extends an offer, we help you move into visa sponsorship.
5Sponsor and visa process
Your designated sponsor issues your DS-2019; you complete the U.S. Embassy interview.
6Pre-departure preparation
Orientation on housing, community, and what to expect, so you arrive prepared.
7Arrival and first year
We stay in touch with regular check-ins through your first academic year.

You will never pay us before you know whether you qualify.

We will never hold your documents — passport, diplomas, or anything else.

We will never refer you to a lender.

You may share any agreement you sign with us with a lawyer, an advocate, your family, or anyone else — nothing is confidential to you.

We support you through your first academic year, not just until you arrive.

Your balance never accelerates. If you leave your placement or the program for any reason, whatever remains stays on its original schedule. No lump sum ever becomes due.

We will never report a payment dispute to your sponsor, your school, or any immigration authority as a way of pressuring you. A balance owed to us is an ordinary civil matter and nothing more.
What It Costs
Screening is always free. There is no charge and no obligation to find out whether you qualify.
Every fee disclosed in writing. Itemized and complete, before you sign or pay anything.
Fixed at signing. Our fee never increases.
Paid in milestones. Any balance due after you arrive begins 30 days after your first U.S. paycheck — not on a fixed date after arrival. If you have not been paid, nothing is due, and you do not need to ask us for anything.
Forgiven if you cannot continue. If you become unable to continue in the program through no fault of your own, your remaining balance is forgiven in full.
Transfers if your placement falls through. If you lose a placement but can move to another school, we work to place you again at no additional charge and your payment schedule simply continues — nothing is accelerated and no penalty applies.
